Judy’s Journey with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma

I was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma in my right breast the middle of June, 2023, when I was 45 years old. I am now 7mo out from my 1st surgery, 5mo from my re-excision. These photos were taken when I was 4 and 2mo out.

I chose to have a double mastectomy for a few reasons, the main one being peace of mind. ILC is considered a 'sneaky cancer, ' and I didn't want to be constantly worried and afraid that it would crop up in my 'good' breast (which was already showing a few suspicious spots).

We didn't get everything the first time, which is why I had the 2nd surgery. That surgery allowed me to avoid radiation. My oncotype showed that chemotherapy would have less than 1% benefit, so I was also fortunate enough to skip that. I'm now in maintenance, and on an injection and an oral AI to drop my estrogen levels, because my cancer was hormone positive.

This has put me into menopause years earlier than I was anticipating. I'm still adjusting to the meds, and my new normal.

The Scars of Beauty shoots have given me a new perspective on my breast cancer diagnosis, and the amputation of my breasts. Being around other women who have had a similar diagnosis has helped ground me, and given me a new bond. The photos themselves help me see myself in a different way; not just as someone who's "lost" a part of her femininity. They help me see how strong and resilient we can be. Linnell has been instrumental in this. Her vision has helped me find mine.
